Dad gave me as a gift a used D90, with kit lens 18-105. I couldn’t be more happy. I just got accepted to high school situated in Kazimierz Quarter in Cracow, where everyday I could experience morning light glimmering through the corners of the old town surrounding, filtering and reflecting through the windows of rusty coffee shops. School was the highest building in an area, so from the top floor we were blissed with panorama of whole Cracow, from golden spring mornings to blue winter evenings. The light was everywhere and it was filling the troubled teenager soul.
And Dad bought me a camera! I didn’t even have any friends yet, so I would experiment with the capturing ‚macro’, pigeons outside the window and noir self portraits.
At school soon I’ve discovered, the girl I was sitting next to on French lessons, was going to an evening ballet school as well. We caught up right away, connected by the love for ballet, art and The Beatles. We were shy and had every issue a teenager has with their self image. But I took the courage and soon started to take my camera with me, while we were wondering through the Kazimierz streets after school.
As soon as I started, I would ask every person I know to model for me. And damn, my friends were into it with no doubts! I’ve got many pictures from the sunrises, when, in full clothing and make up, they would go out and help me shoot. I will not bring up the quality of these photos here, but I think back then, it was born from the love for light and posing people the way I thought was editorial-worthy. Thanks to them, I’ve started to learn how to take portraits
